A maestro in creating rhythmic patterns, Sivakumar hails from a family of musicians and is a disciple of veteran Mridangam maestro Karaikudi Krishnamurthy. He has been working with veteran musicians and dancers for almost 35 years. He has also composed jatis (complicated rhythmic patterns) and presented them in recitals of veteran dancers such as Yamini Krishnamurthy, Sonal Mansingh, Kanaka Srinivasan, Geeta Chandran, Rama Vaidyanathan to name a few and has composed rhythmic patterns for percussion ensembles. He is also a well-known Mridangam player. Kameswaran Sivakumar popularly known as Karaikudi Sivakumar received the prestigious award 'maestro of rhythm' from Apoorva ragam, a Tamil magazine in Chennai in 2007. Veteran percussionist Valayapatti presented him with this award. Sivakumar has received appreciation from press and people who are highly musicial including the late veteran critic Subbudu.
