An eminent classical flautist and music composer, Guruvayur S.Srikrishnan was initiated into vocal music by his mother Smt.Kanakambal. He had his early training in flute under N. Krishna Bhagavatar and K.V.Ramachandra Baghavatar. He gave his first public flute recital at the age of eight. As a boy of ten he had the rare privilege of performing before the Maharaja of Cochin who honoured him wih a "Veershrinkala", one of the highest honours of the time in appreciation of his music. Srikrishnan who has completed over 70 years in the field of music, joined All India Radio in 1954 and retired as Station Director in 1994. His compositions include over eight hundred light and devotional songs for radio broadcasts and cassettes, innumerable classical kritis, and music scores for documentaries and features. Srikrishnan has presented flute recitals all over the country. His media appearances include Doordarshan's National Programme of Music and the Akashvani Sangeet Sammelans among others. He received the Kerala Sangeeth Natak Academy award in 1985. In 1997, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to music, he was made a Fellow of the Kerala Sangeeth Natak Academy. He received the Guruvayurappan Puraskaram in 2001. Srikrishnan's flute reveals a unique style, which is a synthesis of his rich musical heritage, his vibrant imagination and his long association with the legendary flute maestro T.R.Mahalingam who was a close friend. His raga elaboration is detailed and soaked in rasa while his command over tala and the technique of playing make for breathtakingly fast rhythmic deliveries. GS
