About Viji Professional experience:

Professional Bharatanatyam dance artist, residing in Philadelphia, U.S.A since 2002.
Over a decade of experience as a choreographer, performer and teacher

In addition to Bharatanatyam also proficient in other dance forms like Kalaripayyattu and Chhau (martial art forms of Kerala and Orissa, India, respectively)

Taken courses in Ballet and Contemporary dance forms at the London School of Ballet and Contemporary dance, United Kingdom

Have visited U.K. on numerous occasions to choreograph and participate in major international touring productions with Chitraleka Dance Company, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, Moby Duck and Sampad. I have also participated in the touring production of Lata Pada's Sampradaya dance Company, Canada. I have assisted Anita Ratnam of Arangham dance Company in choreography and also performed in her production, which toured India.

In 2003 founded a performing arts institute named Three Aksha. I am currently the Director of Three Aksha Institute of Performing Arts, which is based in Philadelphia. Three Aksha's major role is to promote awareness among general public about Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form as well as the ancient and rich Indian heritage. Since its inception in 2003 Three Aksha's activities have widened and now encompass hosting of dance performances, conducting dance workshops, lecture demonstrations and performing for fund raisers nationally and internationally

Since 2005 in addition to the performances I am also actively involved in the didactic activities, such as delivering weekly dance lessons to children and adolescents. I have been an invited guest lecturer at the Moore College of Art and Design as well as the Temple University of Philadelphia to teach students the aesthetics and history of Indian dance.

Conducted dance workshops on Panchatantra stories and also folk stories of India with Grover Cleveland elementary school, Philadelphia, The school in Rose valley, Rose Valley PA on a regular basis.

Since 2006 three of my senior students Ms. Shobha Narayanan and Ms. Vandana Rao and Ms. Ameetha Palanivel have procured the dance apprenticeship awarded by the council on the arts in Pennsylvania and New Jersey

Ms. Narayanan received the PCA apprenticeship (2006) for advance study under my guidance which resulted in a 20 minute dance piece "Nrityantara", an amalgamation of Bharatanatyam and Ballet with Indian classical music with Western Classical orchestration. Ms. Narayanan showcased this choreography in both Albany, New York and also here in Philadelphia.

Ms. Vandana Rao received an apprenticeship grant from the PCA (2007) for mastering her technique and facial expression in Bharatanatyam.

Ms. Ameetha Palanivel has received an apprenticeship grant from the New Jersey Council on Arts (2008) for mastering her facial expression in Bharatanatyam.

Two of my senior students Ms. Vandana Rao and Ms. Monolisa Ghose completed their Bharatanatyam arangetram (Debut full pledged solo dance performance with live music) on the 7th and the 14th of July 2007, respectively.
