Vasanthi Sridhar is one of the most promising dancers in the contemporary field of Bharata Natyam dance today. She was initiated into dance at the tender age of five. She recieved her initial training under Guru Mahalingam Pillai. She has also benefited from the tutelage of Guru Kadirvelu and Guru Soudarajan and studied abhinaya under Smt Jamuna Krishnan and Smt Kalanidhi Narayanan. Along with her sisters Uma and Bhagya she formed the renowned Sastri sisters trio,who with their precise movements, verve and coordination carved a niche for themselves both at home and abroad. She is a first class honours graduate in Fine Arts of Mumbai University. She has been awarded both the National Merit Scholarship in dance by the overnment of India as well asFellowship in Nattuvangam by Department of Culture. Vasanthi has now made a name for herself as a solo artiste also. Possesed of a striking stage presence, crisp footwork and appealing abhinaya (emotional expressions), she has achieved a high reputation in the dance field amongst her peers and contemporaries. Her performances have commanded both critical and popular praise alike. She promises to be one of the memorable faces in dance in the new millemium, which will certainly see her add to her already rich laurels. Vasanthi also runs a dance school Prashanti Natya Nilayam. Under her aegis, her students have been presented in a collective arangetram (debut performance) as well as a memorable dance drama. More such performances are planned in the near future. |
