CARNATIC CLASSICAL VOCALIST

The resonant strains of the 'tambura'…The swift meanderings of a 'raaga'…The adroit accompaniment of the 'mridhangam'…The singer,with eyes that takes flight into the expansive ocean of imagination and creativity,transporting the 'rasika'to 'ananda' or bliss.

Such a singer is Sudha Raghuraman.Born in a family of distinguished musicians,she had her training in Carnatic music from her grandfather,Sangeetha Bhushanam Shri O.V.Subramanyam,the highly acclaimed doyen of the Tanjavur'bani'.Surrounded by the pulsating musical atmosphere at home,further enriched by her father Shri O.S.Sridhar,and her paternal uncles,well known carnatic vocalist Sri O.S.Thiagarajan and Sri O.S.Arun,her formative years were the ideal ground for listening by listening.

In addition to training in vocal music,Sudha learnt the violin from Late Guru V.Janakiraman,the renowned teacher in Delhi.After learning the technicalities of the violin for 8 years under a CCRT scholarship,she gave her 'arangertram' in the 1989.

Equipped with a strong 'swaragnanam',Sudha began her intensive training under her grandfather.He taught her the nuances of various 'raagas',which in turn facilitated her in delineating even rare 'raagas'.Sudha was awarded a scholarship by Sahitya kala Parishad in 1996 for advanced training in music.

With her superlative training under her eminent gurus,Sudha brings to carnatic music her own unique sensibility.Her music glows with rare luster of creativity and spontaneity.Gifted with a rich,sonorous voice,her music is characterized by her unmatched adherence to 'sruti' and 'laya'.Her music is delightful synthesis of robust energy and meditative stillness.Sudha's unique forte lies in her effortless delineation of rare,complicated ragas.Be it in the leisurely exposition of a 'raaga' and 'neraval'or the quickness of the vibrant 'swarapratharas',Sudha's music is symbol of her deep sensitivity to 'sahatya'.

Sudha has performed at several prestigious music festivals and platforms,both in home and abroad. Sudha has the unique distinction of being directly graded by the AIR(without audition),after she won the All India Radio vocal Music Competition.A graded artist,she is also empaneled with the ICCR as a soloist.

As a creative music composer, Sudha has composed the musical score for several well known dance dramas.A widely traveled artist,Sudha has enthralled audiences globally with her refreshing renditions. In recognition of her commendable talent and performing skill,Sudha was awarded the 'Delhi Yuva Kalakar' award by the Sree Shanmukhananda Sangeeta Sabha,New Delhi in 2006.She continues to learn,perform,compose and teach,thereby extending the frontiers of her art.
