Saroja
from a very tender age of seven years trained under the accomplished
Guru Lalitha of Saraswati Gana Nilayam, She is the third generation(parampara)disciple
of the famous Guru Kattumannar Muthukumaran Pillai. She has also undergone
training in Carnatic music under Prof.P.Sambamoorthy at the Madras University.
Saroja has been one of India's prominent Bharatanatyam exponents earning
her fame as an intellegent and innovative choreographer. Her dance repertoire
has revolved around subjects ranging from mythology to current social
issues that have been widely acclaimed by the audience and the press.
She has widely travelled within India as well as abroad performing and
giving lecdems at various prestigious venues. She has also choreographed
over a score of enthralling ballets based on mythology as well as social
themes that have been appreciated and repeatedly sponsored.
As
the Founder President, she established GANESA NATYALAYA, a leading fine
arts institution in the capital in 1974, which has its own building
based in South Delhi. This institution has churned out over hundred
graduates who have performed their Arangetrams. Several disciples of
her had been given scholarships from various departments for their ability.
Besides, almost fifteen other art centres in various names are being
run, the world over by her disciples. She is the recipient of several
National and State awards and titles, name a few are "Padmashri"
from Govt. of India " Delhi State Award" from Sahitya Kala
Parishad of Delhi Govt. and "Kalaimamani" from Govt. of Tamil
Nadu besides being honoured with titles and credits from various prestigious
institutions. Saroja has delved deeper in this field by bringing out
several books, "The Science of Bharatanatyam", released by
the then Hon'ble Prime minister of India Smt.Indira Gandhi, was judged
the best art book of the year, "Bharatanatyam -In Depth Study",
released by the then resident
of India Shri S.D.Sharma, "Carnataka Sangeetham",released
by Shri H.Y.Sharada Prasad, the then Principal Secretary of Prime Minister
and also submitted a research paper "Encyclopaedia of Bharatantyam"
to National Council for Research and Training(NCERT) and released cassettes
set to the compositions of Subramanya Bharati.
For Saroja, dance is a means of expressing the inner
quest for self realization. She aspires to use her dance as a medium
to come closer to the supreme truth. While addressing several contemporary
issues that all mankind, Saroja dreams of cutting across cultural barriers
through art for spreading the message of harmony and peace. In this
attempt, even in her actions she has contributed socially, through free
education of dance to some deprived sections of the society and giving
charity recitals for deserving causes like cancer, drugs, blind, women
empowerment etc.
